Do I need a Mentor or Coach to succeed?
This is a really tough question to tackle. You could argue for either-or. While reaching success at a faster rate is almost always true, but having a Mentor or a Coach could be costly. Do you need one? When should you get one?
I have been playing with this question for quite some time now. If you are working on self-improvement and becoming successful I am sure you have come across a few coaches or mentors by now. Especially if you are on Instagram, every person is a mentor or a coach on there. While listening to Tony Robbins on YouTube the other day, I remember him saying how much he hates the term “coach”. It is very interesting because he came up with the term “coach” when it comes to success. He was becoming very successful at helping people succeed, and when somebody would ask him what he does, he just wouldn’t know what to call himself, and that is when he came up with the term “coach”. Now he hates it because the market is oversaturated with it.
If you are working on becoming successful in life the first step should be to start reading a lot of books of successful people. It is the best way to learn their thought process. For those few hours you get the chance to be inside the authors mind. That is why reading is so powerful. I have made quite a few favorite authors along the way. The top 11 books that I have read can be found under the resources page. As I was learning more and more about the authors, I have found out that some of them do seminars. These seminars could be either a couple of days or maybe just a weekend. The idea sounded pretty good but when I found out that these seminars could cost a couple of thousand dollars, and sometimes even $40,000 it did not sound so great any more. If the author has a couple of books out on the market, what could they teach during these seminars that they charge $40,000 for?
The other day I saw a “Mentorship is necessary, change my mind otherwise” post on a bigger Instagram page. Of course me being an engineer and a numbers person, I threw together a little math and posted a comment: “Yes it is necessary and great if it does not cost $40,000.” I received a pretty quick response: “What if that $40,000 helps you make $1,000,000?” A few other comments came to support the bigger account of course. I didn’t fully disagree with the bigger account, because having a coach or a mentor could speed up your learning process much quicker. The idea of making $1,000,000 sounded great since that’s my whole goal. However, think about this for a second. Let’s say that for that $40,000 you get a full week of seminars and not just a weekend. Yes it is true that you could learn more during that one week then you have throughout the past couple of months. But also keep in mind that during those seminars you will not be the only one. There will be hundreds, even thousands of other people and you will not get one on one attention. But for this example let’s just stick to a small number of five hundred people. Out of those five hundred people not everyone will become a millionaire. Personally, I would think that even if ten percent of those people become a millionaire that is still a high percentage, but let’s stick to ten percent. That ten percent is only one tenth of the people who all paid the $40,000, yet the person teaching the seminar made his $20,000,000 regardless. Even if half of that money goes to staff, housing, and food, $10,000,000 left is still a nice stack of money for a week’s worth of seminars. After posting a comment with the numbers, I have gained a couple of people on my side really quick.
Like I have mentioned before, I am not totally against Mentors, or Coaches. They serve a huge role in becoming successful much quicker. Maybe it is because I am an engineer, and I am used to the numbers game and that is why I run calculations before I decide to jump into anything. Also, nowadays Google is your greatest Coach or Mentor. A ton of information is reachable within seconds. If you would like to become successful the best way to start is start reading books, and start searching for information online. Your mind is also the greatest treasure you have. The mind is just like our body, if we feed it junk we will feel like junk, so keep feeding it with valuable information. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is an excellent book to start with. If the information gathered from books, and online research does not help, maybe then it is time to get a Mentor or a Coach. Otherwise keep on thinking and growing rich! Until the next post….
